Having a second bowl really adds a lot to your mixer's usefulness. It's especially important when making genoise-style recipes where you prepare a thick batter and the fold in whipped egg whites. Yes, you can make the batter in your mixer bowl and then transfer it to a holding bowl, scrupulously clean out the mixer bowl keeping mind that egg whites won't whip up if contaminated by any fat, then whip the eggs and fold them into the second bowl. But it's easier and cleaner to prepare the batter in one mixer bowl, then whip the eggs in a second dishwasher-clean mixing bowl and then fold them into the batter still in the first mixer bowl. Then, both mixer bowls can go into the dishwasher for cleanup. It's very hand to have a second bowl when making a dough that has to rise; it can just stay in your first mixer bowl and you can keep working using your second bowl. It's very handy to have two.
